Adirondack Region Teams Preparing for the New York State Regional Championships

The Empire State Games will always hold a special place in the hearts of New York lacrosse players, coaches, families, and fans.  Prior to the emergence of club lacrosse and recruiting showcases, participation in the ESG lacrosse tournament was the primary way for high school players to be seen by college coaches, and being named to one of the regional teams rosters was among the top honors in the sport.  Due to a lack of State funding, the Empire State Summer Games ceased in 2010.

Recognizing the void felt by the lacrosse community through the cancellation of the ESG, Long Island natives Mike and Corey Winkoff have launched the New York State Regional Lacrosse Championships.  The NYSRC will be held at the University at Binghamton on Tuesday, July 24th & Wednesday, July 25th, and will feature select teams representing the Adirondack, Central, Hudson Valley, Nassau, NYC, Long Island Parochial, Suffolk, and Western regions of the state in 2019, 2020, 2021 & 2022 graduation year divisions.

The Adirondack Region, which includes players who attend school in Section 2 or 10, and players whose primary residence is located in Section 2 or 10 but attend Boarding School will be fielding 2019, 2020, and 2021/22 teams in the event.

I recently had the chance to check out the Adirondack Region 2019 Team, coached by Doug McIver and Dan McKeon,  as they practiced at Albany Academy.  While the team is largely comprised of uncommitted players who in part look forward to participating in the NYSRC for the recruiting exposure that it will provide, 25% of the players on the roster have already committed.  In regard to the participation of the committed players, Coach McIver commented,

I think the opportunity to play against some of the best players in the state committed or uncommitted is unique for all of our athletes. The guys who are already committed to play at the next level are using this experience to play with friends from other schools in a more serious setting than that of a regular weekend showcase. Also, the chance to represent the Adirondack region is something that this group immediately was drawn to.
