2018 Voorheesville Season Preview

Voorheesville HS NYSPHSAA Section 2, Class D Wasaren League

Derek Gavin, a graduate of the Niskayuna High School (’07) and Siena College (’11) lacrosse programs is in his second year as Head Coach of the Voorheesville Boys Varsity Lacrosse team.  Prior to serving as Head Coach, he assisted then Voorheesville Varsity coach Tom Gladd in 2015 and 2016.

Coach Gavin will be joined by Monica Koralus in her first year as Assistant Coach.  A graduate of Millbrook HS (’13) and the Sage Colleges (’17), Koralus was a two sport athlete at Sage (soccer/lacrosse).  As an attacker at sage, she totaled 234 points.  In regard to Koralus joining the Voorheesville staff, Coach Gavin offered that she will be “A big addition to our program- her experience on the field on the offensive end will be a first for us.”

2017 saw a Freshman and Sophomore heavy Voorheesville team finish with a 3-13 record.  With the start of the 2018 season, Coach Gavin commented,

“This year we return 84% of our point scoring from 2017. Goalie Evan O’Connor (2019) will enter his 3rd year as starting goalie- helping to solidify a defense that is very young.
Team Strengths: All starting attack are entering at least their 2nd year as a starter. First line midfield all saw significant playing time last year as well.”

Players expected to make significant contributions this season include:

  • Goalie- Evan O’Connor- Junior- 208 saves in 2017 (59.1%)
  • Midfield- Ian Owens- Junior- 58 pts in 2017
  • Midfield- Jake Palmer- Junior- 42 pts in 2017
  • Attack- Aiden Crouse- Junior- 33 pts in 2017
  • LSM/Defense- Trevor Relyea- Sophomore- 78 GB’s in 2017- 38 caused turnovers

The team’s schedule will include a Non-league game vs Utica-Proctor on May 12 at Knox Field in Johnstown- the program’s first out of Section 2 match-up.

Coach Gavin concluded, “As a growing program this teams looks to be the best yet- returning seven of last years ten starters. Voorheesville will also have its first modified team this year, and the youth program has numbers for a 1/2 grade team for the first time ever- to add to 3/4 and 5/6 teams.

Voorheesville has opened 2018 with wins over Lansingburgh and Maple Hill.
