2018 Cambridge Season Preview

Cambridge HS NYSPHSAA Section 2, Class D Wasaren League

Cambridge Boys Varsity Coach Geoff Hoffer played high school lacrosse in Edgewood, Maryland and went on to play at the United States Naval Academy. Geoff graduated with a Mechanical Engineering degree and served 7 years in the U. S. Navy as a P-3 Orion Naval Flight Officer. Today, Geoff is a principal with Aztech Geothermal.

In 2004, Geoff helped to launch lacrosse in Cambridge, NY with a single 5/6 team. Cambridge now has players in K-12. In 2008 Cambridge added its first high school team and Geoff assisted Coach Tom Pillsworth; 2015 CCS added JV which Geoff Coached and Assisted Varsity; in 2017 Geoff took over the reigns as head varsity coach and led the team to their first Sectional Championship game.

Alumni Terry DiMaggio will be coaching the new modified team and supporting Varsity. Terry played for CCS and graduated in 2012. He assisted with the JV team in 2017.

In Coach Hoffer’s first year as head coach CCS finished up the regular season with an 11-3 record. Cambridge beat Schuylerville in the semi-final Class D match up, securing its first ever trip to the Sectional Championship game. The Indians lost in the Sectional Championship game, finishing up the season with an overall record of 12-4.

For the 2018 season Cambridge will field a Varsity team and add a Modified program, but does not have the numbers to support a JV team. Coach Hoffer has scheduled an aggressive series of preseason scrimmages and has challenged the squad with a game schedule that includes tougher opponents outside their normal Wasaren League counterparts.

This season CCS returns 6 seniors from its 2017 roster including Maxwell Hoffer (Attack, 4 year starter and Clarkson University commit.), Jonas Butz (Midfield, 3 year starter) and Zack Rowland (Attack, 3 year starter). Ethan Jeskie and Tyler Endee return to anchor the defense.

Coach Hoffer will rely on the above mentioned Seniors to guide the way and expects significant contributions from returning players Nick Sarto (Senior, LSM), Tommy English (Junior, Midfield) and Gabriel Sgambettera (Sophomore, Midfield). Coming up from JV to fill in the gaps are Calvin Schneider (Sophomore, Midfield), Jamie Olvera (Junior, Attack), Jake Murray (Junior, Attack), Cole Murray (Junior, Defense) and Daniel Blanchfield (Junior, Goalie).
