Guilderland High School Girls Lacrosse
NYSPHSAA Section 2 Class A, Suburban Council
Kara DePaula Lynch is in her second year with Guilderland, but first year as head coach taking over for Carrie Britt this season. Coach DePaula formerly coached Shaker Varsity lacrosse for the 2013,14, and 15 seasons. After the conclusion of the 2015 season DePaula left Shaker and began working as a General Manager for the Long Island Sound in the Women’s Professional Lacrosse League (UWLX) and later was promoted to Director of Operations for the league itself (UWLX). Prior to coaching at Shaker Coach DePaula was a volunteer Assistant Coach at Skidmore for two seasons. DePaula also was head Varsity Coach for Falmouth High School in Falmouth Maine. DePaula graduated inn 2001 from UMass Amherst where she played 4 years of D1 women’s lacrosse. DePaula was born in Niskayuna, NY and attended Albany Academy for Girls where she was a member of the Varsity Lacrosse team which competed in the first ever NYS Girl’s Lacrosse Championship Game. She currently lives in Clifton Park with her husband Paul, step-daughter Cameron Tooley and three young sons, Evan, Carter and Mason.
Along side Head Coach DePaula is her assistant Courtney Hill whom herself has a lengthy lacrosse resume. Hill is in her second year as assistant with the lady Dutch. Prior to Guilderland, Coach Hill was the assistant Varsity coach at Niskayuna under Jason Bach. Coach Hill started her coaching career in the area at Shaker High School where she began as assistant varsity coach and was moved to head varsity girls lacrosse coach for the 2012 season. That season Coach Hill brought the Bison all the way to the State Championships. The Bison made it to the semifinals of Class A before losing in OT to Penfield by a score of 4-5. Coach Hill left Shaker the following year because her family was relocated out of the Capital District. Ironically her open coaching position was then filled by Coach DePaula. Coach Hill played Division 1 Lacrosse at UAlbany prior to her coaching career. Her husband Jim is the Head men’s lacrosse coach at Saint Rose having played at D1 powerhouse Syracuse himself. Now the two Coaches, Hill and DePaula will join forces on the sidelines for the Dutch this season.
Last year the Lady Dutch finished the regular season with a league record of 11-1 and overall record of 13-3. the lady Dutch went on to beat Saratoga 18-9 in the second round of sectionals, and beating Shenendehowa by a score of 9-8 (OT) to win the Section 2 Class A Championship. In the first round of Regionals the Dutch beat Kingston by a score of 15-8 before losing to North Rockland in the regional finals by a score of 10-13.
Having lost five seniors last year, four of which had significant contributions to the midfield and attack, the Guilderland Dutch will have a rebuilding year on the attacking end of the field. However, with all their starting defenders and goalie returning the Dutch look to have a very strong defense going forward. With the change in coaching staff the team is excited and optimistic as to what the 2018 season may bring.
The Dutch return eight key starters this year and look to be quite strong on the defensive end of the field. The team has an abundance of talent and strength in midfield as well. They also have one of the most talented attackers in the suburban council in senior Kadi Futia. Amanda Nieman also brings incredible crease rolling and stick skills to the field. Aside from on the field talent the Dutch boasts a very talented and knowledgable coaching staff in DePaula and Hill. Players expected to make significant contributions include:
- Kadi Futia – Senior attack
- Alexa Dicaprio – Senior- Goalie
- Courtney Rafferty – Senior- Defense
