2018 CBA Season Preview

Christian Brothers Academy NYSPHSAA Section 2 Class A, Suburban Council Gray Division

Entering 2018 in his third season as Varsity Head Coach of CBA Lacrosse, and 16th overall season with the team, Rich Scully recently took the time to preview the Brothers’ upcoming season for Capital District Lax.

Reflecting on 2017, Coach Scully noted that the Brothers played four overtime games – a 5-4 Double OT win over Columbia, and losses to Burnt Hills 8-7, Ballston Spa 9-8, and Guilderland 8-7 to finish with a 6-11 overall record.  Key graduation losses from thye 2017 campaign include: Nolan Isabella D (Southern New Hampshire), G Darrian Poole, M Amir Taylor (Salisbury, Siena), PJ McHugh FO (St Rose), M Matt VanDerVeer ( St Rose), D Jimmy Rogler (SUNY Poly).

To prepare the team for the upcoming season, Coach Scully and his assistants, Defensive Coordinator Dean Mancini, and Goalies & Face-offs Coach Matt Risler, have put together an aggressive pre-season scrimmage schedule including Delbarton, CBA NJ, Liverpool NY, Immaculata, NJ, St Agustines NJ, and Kingston.

When the regular season begins, in addition to playing a strong Suburban Council schedule, the Brothers will also play some key Non-League games: April 5th (home) vs Iona Prep (NYCHSAA), April 14th (away) vs Suffern ( NYSPHSAA Sec 2), and May 12th (away) vs Monroe-Woodbury ( NYSPHSAA Sec 9).



Coach Scully anticipates his team’s strengths to include the leadership of four year varsity players and senior Captains Luke McMahon, Luke Anthony, Nolan Aery, and Mike Pumiglia.  He also noted the team’s experience, including five returning attackmen who saw significant action in 2016 and 2017, the previously mentioned four year starting LSM Luke McMahon who has scooped up 294 career ground balls, and team depth.  Coach Scully expects some competition for key positions including at goalie and FOGO.

Players expected to make significant contributions include:

  • Returning four year players, Leading scorer A Nolan Aery 24G-15A , A Luke Anthony 20G-9A in 9 games, LSM Luke McMahon 8G-8A 110 ground balls (2017 Academic All American), A Mike Pumiglia returning from injury,
  • 2018 Graduation year players: Defenders Dom Meola & Aiden Sausville, and Midfielders Andrew Mesick & Nic Tirino
  • 2019 Graduation year players: A Anthony Pizzola 20G-14A, M/FO Hunter Pemrick 5G- 17A, M Ben Curro; Goalies Max Tedesco & Lachlan Rogers, and FO/DM Mike Cunningham
  • 2020 Graduation year players: A Freddie Smith 3rd year varsity player 15G-10A, returner D Nick Mattice, returning starter, and M Jon Rollo
  • 2021 Graduation year player: M Christian Davidson

College commits include:

  • Nolan Aery 2018 Attack Pace University (NLI)
  • Dom Meola 2018 Defense St Rose (NLI)
  • Luke Anthony 2018 Attack Taft Prep School
  • Luke McMahon 2018 LSM (anticipates a Spring commitment to an Ivy League school)
  • Aidan Sausville 2018 Defense (anticipates a Spring commitment), and
  • Matt Timoney 2018 Defense Connecticut College, commit

During the season, the team will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the CBA Lacrosse program.
