On Sunday August 6th, the Cloudsplitters 45+ team claimed third place in the 2017 Lake Placid Summit Classic’s 44+ Gold Division.  Cloudsplitters Captain Jeff Purner told Capital District Lax that the team expected to be in the Silver bracket, and were surprised by their seeding in the Gold bracket.  However, the seeding set up a rematch against Ancient Ivy – a team that beat the Cloudsplitters in the event’s Silver Championship bracket in 2016.

The Cloudsplitters made the most of the rematch, defeating Ancient Ivy 11-10 in OT.  Asked to comment on keys to the win, Purner offered,

“Rob Delbene in goal made a lot of clutch saves, supported by Mick Dyer on D.  Jon Bang was huge on face-offs and scored the winning goal in OT being defended by Lars Tiffany, he went to his right and came back with a monster rip lefty past the goalie for the winner.  Eric Purdy also came up big at attack with several goals.  It was a great TEAM win in a bracket we weren’t even supposed to be in, gold!”

Cloudsplitter, recognized as a Lake Placid Summit Classic Team of Distinction in 2014, entered teams in
five divisions in this year’s event:

  • 18+ finished at 2-2
  • 35+ finished at 3-1
  • 45+ finished at 2-2
  • 55+ finished at 3-1
  • 60+ finished at 3-0
