Yorktown Advances to Class B Title Game with the 2OT Win over Garden City

On Wednesday evening, the University at Albany’s John Fallon Field was the site of the NYSPHSAA Class A and B Boys’ Lacrosse East Semi-Finals.

The Class B game, featured Section I’s Yorktown Cornhuskers who entered the game with a 16-4 record, and by way of a 12-11 win over Niskayuna on June 3rd; and Section VIII’s Garden City – LaxPower’s #1 ranked Class B team in the state.   The Trojans advanced to the semis with a 14-4 win over Eastport South Manor on June 3rd, and a 16-3 record.

Yorktown took a 4-1 lead into halftime, but Garden City regrouped and scored three unanswered goals in the second half.  The game remained knotted at 4 at the end of regulation, and through the first overtime period.  Dom Cioffi buried the game winner in the 2nd OT to send Yorktown to the Class B Championship game.  Yorktown averaged over 14 goals per game prior to this contest and Garden City over 10 goals per game, so the 5-4 score was low by each team’s standards.

With the win, Yorktown earned a trip to the Championship game where the Cornhuskers will face Victor, winner of the last two NYSPHSAA Class B titles, at St. John Fisher on June 10th at 12:30 PM.  Although the game site was pre-determined, it will be something of a home atmosphere for Victor, as Victor High School is just over ten miles away from St. John Fisher.
