Shaker Lacrosse Jason Decker Day Saturday June 11, 2016
On Saturday June 11, 2016 Shaker Lacrosse will be hosting its’ annual Jason Decker Day, which will include an alumni game and youth lacrosse games. The event honors Jason Decker, a 1995 Shaker graduate who was an Academic All-American, three time first team all-league defenseman, and two-time Empire State Games player. A scholarship player at Georgetown, during his senior year Jason helped lead the Hoyas to their only appearance in the Final Four. Tragically he was killed in an automobile accident a year after graduation.
Shaker Lacrosse alum and current Assistant Coach and Offensive Coordinator of the Blue Bison Joe Pollicino commented, “Alumni games have been going on at Shaker since the mid-1980’s. The college guys would come home and help us out at practice and after practice to prepare us for sectionals and states. I really believe that is one of the reasons we had success during the 80s and into the 90’s.” Pollicino further commented that following a lapse in alumni games in the late 1990’s, Coach Joe Bennett re-instituted the game in the early 2000’s and named the event Jason Decker Day as a tribute to Decker’s legacy at Shaker.
In regard to the youth lacrosse games, Jason Decker Day will feature teams ranging from grades 1/2 – 7/8. In addition to the host North Colonie Capitals teams, other local participating youth programs typically have a connection to Shaker through their coaching staffs. Pollicino noted, “This year we have a Shaker alum bringing in a team from Vermont.”
The alumni game will take place on Saturday June 11, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Shaker High School with registration at 1:00 PM for all alumni. Participating alumni are encouraged to make a donation to Easter Seals in Jason’s name.
