2015-2016 Winter Lacrosse in the Capital District

A variety of winter 2015-2016 lacrosse opportunities are available to players in the Capital-Saratoga region, including skill development programs, and recreational and competitive leagues.  Descriptions and links to the websites of several programs follow.  Please email us at capdistrictlax@gmail.com if you have a program that you would like us to add to this list.

Boys

Albany Power – Since 2007 the Albany Power has offered a winter program on Sunday mornings at Afrims Sports Dome on Route 7 in Latham.  The focus of the program is to develop skills and tactics through high repetition drills and games.  Participation in optional winter tournaments is offered, but the focus of the program is to ready the players for their spring seasons.  Available to boys in graduation years 2023-2016

Capitalland Lacrosse – The Capitalland Lacrosse Club offers indoor winter boy’s lacrosse programs on Sunday mornings at the Sportsplex in Halfmoon.  Instructional programs are offered for learn to play K-5 grade level, for beginner/novice players in grades 2-10, and an advance group for players in grades 4- 10th. Capitalland also offers leagues for 5th – 8th graders, JV level players and Varsity level players.

Rogue Lacrosse – Rogue Lacrosse offers a variety of winter lacrosse opportunities at the Wilton YMCA in Saratoga Springs on Sundays, including a Winter Box and Skill Development program for players in grades 3-12, a high school box lacrosse league, and a 3×3 tournament scheduled to take place on Martin Luther King day.

Suburban Fri Night League –  Offered at the Afrims Dome in Latham featuring JV and Varsity divisions from local High School programs.  Please see your school coach for additional information.

Tech Valley Lacrosse – offers boys league play on Saturday nights at the Schenectady Armory with 1st-2nd, 3rd-4th, 5th-6th, and 7th-8th grade divisions.  Tech Valley also fields travel box lacrosse teams in the spring-summer.

United Lacrosse – offers specialized training for attackmen with Great Danes assistant coach Merrick Thomson at UAlbany, as well as training for all positions at both UAlbany and the Wilton YMCA in Saratoga Springs.


Girls

ADK Lacrosse – Will be offering a series of December lacrosse clinics conducted by current D1 coaches and former college stars.  Sessions offered include Thursday December 10 at the Saratoga Y in Wilton.  Players in graduation years 2020s and younger are invited and welcome from 4:30-6:00. Players in graduation years 2019 and older are welcome from 6:00-7:30.  Additional sessions will be held on Tuesday December 15 and Thursday December 17 at the Adirondack Dome in Queensbury from 7:30-9:00 for players in graduation years 2017-2022.  Please use the link above to visit the ADK website for information on cost, coaches for these sessions, and more.

Albany Elite – Program offered at the Afrims Dome in Latham with Modified, JV, and Varsity divisions.  Sessions include stick skills, position coaching, drills, and skill implementation.

Capitalland Lacrosse – offers leagues for Modified/JV girls and High School Varsity/College level players as well as instructional programs for learn to play K-5 grade level, for beginner/novice players in grades 4-11, and an advance group for players in grades 8 – 12th.

Rogue Lacrosse – offers  programs for girls in grades 3-12 on Sundays at the Wilton YMCA in Saratoga .  Players will be coached in shooting, passing, dodging, offensive and defensive techniques, as well as draws. Goalies will be given separate instruction to hone and enhance their specific skill sets.

Gary Govel
Gary has been involved in lacrosse in the Capital District for over 35 years as a player, youth coach, program administrator, parent, and fan. Gary launched www.capitaldistrictlax.com in November 2015 to report on lacrosse news and information of interest to the region, and to share his passion for the game.
